Clegwell & Hartleyburn (CIO) & Hebburn Carr Ellison Carnival Committee Awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service!

Trustees, Volunteers and Staff are celebrating today after the long awaited announcement of receiving the Queens Award for voluntary service!

We would like to give a huge thank you to all those that nominated our Charity and all our volunteers for the fantastic work they undertake each day.

Clegwell and Hartleyburn CIO and Hebburn Carr-Ellison Carnival Committee, (Hebburn) have received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Volunteers are managed by the CIO, a local Registered Charity, and are made up of over 100 volunteers based within the local community. They have been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the United Kingdom and is the volunteering equivalent to an MBE.

Clegwell & Hartleyburn CIO and Hebburn Carr-Ellison Carnival Committee Volunteers have been inspiring local people, the project is just one of the many activities that are run by the Clegwell and Hartleyburn Community Hub, that welcomes around 5,000 people each week. The group of around 100 volunteers provide sport, wellbeing, Youth Provision including childcare facilities as well as supporting the Carr-Ellison Carnival Committee who arrange an annual carnival event. Over the past few years, the (CIO) has been sharing best practice with various organisations and built upon their partnership working with various organisations working very closely with local schools, businesses and community groups.

“Our aim is to provide a vibrant community hub with activities and facilities that help to improve people’s wellbeing, reduce crime and hopefully changes lives for the better,”

Clegwell & Hartleyburn CEO James Trainer and Facilities Manager Emma Lowe says:
“Receiving this recognition for our organisation and for our volunteers brings validation of the value of our contribution over the past five years to the community. It also enhances the pride and prestige to the fantastic volunteers over many events and thousands of volunteer hours, with increasing volunteer hours year on year, continued development of high quality training and the volunteer-led groups in areas
such as marketing, social media, fundraising and training they help ensure local events run smoothly and that those attending have a great experience, not only of the event itself but also of the perception of the area.”

Clegwell & Hartleyburn (CIO) and Hebburn Carr-Ellison Carnival Committee Volunteers is one of the charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The number of nominations remains high year on year, showing that the voluntary sector is thriving and full of innovative ideas to make life better for those around them.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Recipients are announced each year on 2nd June, the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation and the range of activities of Award winners this year is very wide.

Representatives of Clegwell & Hartleyburn (CIO) and Hebburn Carr-Ellison Carnival Committee will receive the award from Ms Lucy Winskell, OBE Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear later this summer followed by invitation to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2023, along with other recipients of this year’s Award.
