Northumbria Police & Crime Commissioner, Kim McGuinness visits Clegwell & Hartleyburn (CIO)

It was great to see Kim McGuinness, Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner and her team, Sgt Young and PC Sweeney, today at Clegwell & Hartleyburn Community Hub. Kim met with Chair Liz McHugh, CEO James Trainer, Facilities Manager Emma Lowe and some of our youth work staff Charlotte MacDougal and Alfie Johnston.

We discussed the current Youth Provision and services to the Community we provide and also the partnership work with the Multi Agency Project Solution (MAPS) project with Northumbria police breaking down the barriers between young people and the police.

We also discussed future working initiatives with the Young People within the community and she was very supportive to support where she could.

The CEO and Chair of the Trustees commented that the work we do would not have been possible if we had not received the support from the National lottery and the funding of £427k over a four-year period. Part of the funding employs staff and another part with also other funders including Barbour and Carr Ellison Trust has supported the building of our new youth facilities building which will be opening in the next few weeks where our youth work staff will engage with young people into various positive activities which will divert them away from anti-social behaviour.

“We want to improve the life chances of all our young people. By engaging young people in Hebburn, into positive activities, this will divert young people away from anti-social behaviour, crime and violence, support them to fulfil their potential and help our residents feel safer.”

Kim McGuinness has also offered to provide information she has gathered from research to support our future funding initiatives, whilst linking to our own current area research.

We discussed findings so far that young people have shared due to lockdown and the effects it has caused them, which include mental health and wellbeing needs
